What is an Appendectomy?

An appendectomy is a surgical operation to remove the appendix when it becomes inflamed or infected, and it is the definitive treatment for acute appendicitis to prevent rupture and spread of infection inside the abdomen.

How is the procedure performed?

  • The surgery is usually carried out under general anesthesia so the patient is fully asleep and feels no pain.
  • In a laparoscopic appendectomy, the surgeon makes several small cuts in the abdomen and inserts a camera and fine instruments.
  • The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to create enough working space, the appendix is identified, tied off, and removed through one of the small incisions.
  • The area is checked for bleeding or infection, then the instruments are removed and the skin incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Appendectomy

  • Smaller incisions and better cosmetic results compared with open surgery.
  • Less postoperative pain and quicker mobilization.
  • Shorter hospital stay, with many patients discharged the same day or the following day.
  • Faster return to normal daily activities and work.

Who needs the procedure?

Appendectomy is indicated for patients diagnosed with appendicitis, particularly when they have sharp pain in the right lower abdomen, fever, nausea, or test results pointing to inflammation, as delaying surgery can lead to perforation and serious intra‑abdominal infection.

Recovery

Most patients stay in hospital for 1–2 days after laparoscopic surgery, then continue recovery at home with rest, gradual return to normal diet, wound care, and avoidance of heavy lifting or strenuous activity for several weeks, according to the surgeon’s advice.
