What is Laparoscopic Hernia Repair?
Laparoscopic hernia repair is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to treat different types of hernias, such as inguinal or ventral hernias, by inserting a camera and instruments through small cuts in the abdomen instead of a large open incision.
How is the procedure performed?
- The patient is given general anesthesia to stay comfortable and pain-free during the operation.
- The surgeon makes several small incisions, inflates the abdomen with gas, and introduces a laparoscope and special instruments.
- The protruding tissues or bowel are gently moved back into their normal position, and a surgical mesh is usually placed over the weak area to strengthen the abdominal wall and reduce the risk of recurrence.
- The instruments are removed and the small skin incisions are closed with sutures or clips.
Benefits
- Smaller cuts and less visible scars compared to open repair.
- Less postoperative pain and reduced need for strong painkillers.
- Faster return to normal movement, work, and daily activities.
- Ability to repair hernias on both sides during the same operation using the same small incisions.
- Precise placement of mesh deeper in the abdominal wall, which may lower the chance of hernia recurrence in many patients.
Who is a candidate?
Laparoscopic hernia repair may be suitable for patients with inguinal, umbilical, or incisional hernias, especially those with bilateral hernias or recurrent hernias after previous open repair, depending on overall health and fitness for general anesthesia.
Recovery
Most patients can walk shortly after surgery and resume light daily activities within a few days, while heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for a period determined by the surgeon, with scheduled follow-up visits to ensure proper healing and long-term results.
